Body Contouring on the Arms
Who can be helped?
Quite a few women feel their arms are too bulky. They have trouble finding blouses and jackets that fit, and often one notices that the material is taut, rather than hanging stylishly. One feels uncomfortably restricted. The reason usually is not excessive arm muscles, but instead too much subcutaneous fat around them. In many predisposed women, this problem worsens with age.
About 50% of the patients with lipedema have involvement of the arms as well as the legs. The only possibility for long-term improvement of the problems on the limbs is liposuction.
More general information on this procedure can be found under: Body Contouring / Liposuction
What is possible?
Vibration-assisted liposuction using tumescent local anesthesia makes possible a targeted, gentle, long-term removal of the cosmetically-disturbing fat deposits on the outer aspects of the upper arms, as well in the transitional zones to the breasts and back, often known as „wings“. On rare occasions, deposits on the forearms can also be removed. The arms become thinner and the patient has increased freedom of motion.
The main requirements for good long-term results are relatively firm tissues and not too much excessive skin with wrinkles or even folds. If excessive skin is present, then a surgical tightening or lifting may be needed. Unfortunately this procedure is often accompanied by unattractive scars. The skin surface and cellulite on the upper arms both tend to improve after liposuction. The skin over and even adjacent to the treated areas becomes recognizably smoother. In a personalized consultation, I will be happy to discuss with you which approaches are best for your arms.
One must wear special compression armlets that are connected by a band across the back. They extend down to the elbows. They can be easily covered with a sweater or long-sleeved blouse. One should avoid upper arm liposuction in the summer months, when disguising the armlets is much harder over the first 3-4 weeks after the procedure.
The first time the compression armlets are changed almost everyone needs „helping hands“. After 1-2 days it becomes as easy as putting on a sweater.
